My name is Josh. I built this for my own stepson before I built it for anyone else, and I am not willing to do anything with your child's information that I would not do with his. This page is the plain-English version of that promise. No lawyer-speak, because you should not need a lawyer to find out what happens to your kid's schoolwork.
The short version. We collect your child's first name, their grade, what they enjoy, and the schoolwork they do with their teacher. We use it for one thing: teaching your child and showing you their progress. We do not sell it. We do not advertise to your child. We do not use it to train AI models. You can read all of it and delete all of it, any time, by asking.
Kitchen Table School is used by children, so a parent or guardian creates the account, chooses what to share, and stays in control of it. A child cannot sign themselves up. If you did not create this account and your child is using it, email me and I will help you sort it out.

If you photograph a completed worksheet for grading, take the picture of the paper. We do not want or need photos of your child, and I would rather you never upload one.
Running a service like this means a handful of companies handle pieces of it. Each one only gets what it needs to do its job:

As the parent, you can do any of the following by emailing hello@kitchentableschool.com. No forms, no hoops, no retention specialist trying to talk you out of it.
I will do these myself, by hand, within a few days. When this is big enough that "email Josh" stops being a real answer, I will replace it with buttons in your account, not with a support maze.
You can generate a read-only progress link to send to a grandparent, a co-op, or anyone who needs records. Anyone holding that link can see that page, so treat it like a house key: share it with people you trust. It shows subject progress and your child's first name. It never shows lesson conversations, uploads, or anything about your account. Ask me and I will retire an old link.
Your child's progress sticks around while your account is open, because that history is the point. It is how the teacher knows them. If you delete your account, we delete their records and uploaded files. Some things linger briefly in routine backups and in payment records we are required to keep for tax purposes, and those age out on their own.
Accounts are separated at the database level so one family's data cannot be read by another. Files like drawings and worksheets are stored privately and served through temporary links, not public URLs. Traffic is encrypted. I take this seriously and I have built it carefully. I am also not going to claim a small operation is unbreachable, because nobody can. If something ever does go wrong, I will tell you plainly and quickly rather than quietly.
If this policy changes in a way that affects what we collect or who sees it, I will email account holders. I am not going to bury a change in a "we've updated our terms" notice nobody reads.

This page describes our actual practices in plain language rather than restating statutes. It is not legal advice, and as the service grows this policy will be reviewed by a lawyer with children's-privacy experience.
