My name is Josh. This is the agreement between your family and Kitchen Table School, written the same way I wrote the privacy page: in plain English, because you should not need a lawyer to understand what you are signing up for. When you create an account or use the service, you are agreeing to what is on this page. If a line here does not sit right with you, email me before you enroll and we will talk about it like people.
The short version. Kitchen Table School gives your child an AI teacher who teaches from real curriculum and keeps an honest record of what was covered. You stay the parent and the legally responsible adult for your child's education. The teacher is powered by AI and can make mistakes, so you stay in the loop. It is $29 a month per child, you can cancel anytime from your own settings, and if your first month does not make school days lighter, say so and we refund it.
Kitchen Table School is a trade name (DBA) of Merlene Mitigation LLC, a Texas limited liability company. Where these terms say "we," "us," or "the service," that is who you are dealing with. You can always reach a real person at hello@kitchentableschool.com.
You must be at least 18 and the parent or legal guardian of the child who will be taught. A parent or guardian creates the account, enters the little we ask for, and stays in control of it. A child cannot sign themselves up, and a child should only use the service with your knowledge and supervision. By creating an account for your child, you confirm you are their parent or guardian and that you consent to the small amount of information we collect about them, which is spelled out in full on the privacy page.
The service is a one-on-one AI teacher, plus the tools around her: placement assessments, lesson conversations, worksheet grading from a photo, printable practice, and a running record of your child's progress. She teaches from the standards for your child's grade and from curriculum you choose to upload.
Here is the honest part, said up front. Your child's teacher is powered by artificial intelligence. She is good, and we have worked hard to keep her honest and safe, but she is not a human, not a certified or licensed teacher, and not infallible. She can misunderstand, and on rare occasions she can be wrong. We have locked down the places where being wrong matters most (she will not guess at a blurry worksheet, and she will tell you when she cannot read something rather than pretend), but you should treat her the way you would treat a very capable tutor you still keep an eye on, not an authority you never check.
This one matters, so I am not going to bury it. Homeschooling is governed by the law of the state you live in, and meeting that law is your responsibility, not ours. Filing the right notice, keeping the records your state requires, handling any testing or evaluation, teaching the subjects your state mandates: that is on you, the parent. Kitchen Table School is a teaching tool that helps you do it well. It is not a school, not an accredited institution, not a legal umbrella, and not a substitute for complying with your state's requirements. The requirement guides we publish are general information to help you research, and they are not legal advice for your specific situation. When in doubt about your state's law, check with your state's education agency or a qualified professional.
Keep your login to yourself and do not share your password. You are responsible for what happens under your account, so if you think someone else has gotten into it, email me right away and I will help you lock it back down. One account is for one family. Please do not resell access or share a single login across unrelated families; each child is meant to have their own teacher, their own classroom, and their own record.
A few plain rules so this stays good for everybody:
If an account is used in a way that is harmful, abusive, or against these terms, we may pause or close it. If I ever have to do that to you, I will tell you why.
The things you and your child make or bring, your uploaded curriculum, worksheet photos, and your child's drawings and work, stay yours. You give us permission to use them only to run the service for you: to let the teacher teach from them, grade them, and keep your child's record. We do not claim ownership of your family's work, we do not sell it, and we do not use your child's work to train AI models. The flip side: the website, the software, the teacher's design, our written guides, and the Kitchen Table School name are ours, and using the service does not give you the right to copy or resell them.
I built this carefully and I stand behind it, but I am also not going to hide behind lawyer-language, so here is the plain truth about the limits.
The service is provided as it is. We cannot promise a specific educational result. Learning depends on a lot of things we do not control, including how the service is used at your own kitchen table, so we do not guarantee particular grades, test scores, or outcomes. We also cannot promise the service will never be down, never have a bug, or never make a mistake, though we work hard on all three and fix what we find.
To the fullest extent the law allows, Merlene Mitigation LLC is not liable for indirect or consequential losses, and our total liability to you for any claim connected to the service is limited to the amount you paid us in the twelve months before the claim. Some states do not allow certain limits like these, so to the extent a limit here is not allowed where you live, it does not apply to you, and nothing here is meant to take away a right you have that cannot be waived.
You can stop using the service and cancel anytime. We can also end or suspend an account that is being misused or that breaks these terms. If your account ends, your right to use the service ends with it, and your data is handled the way the privacy page describes, including your right to have it deleted.
I would much rather you email me and let us work it out directly, and in almost every case we can. These terms are governed by the laws of the State of Texas, without regard to its conflict-of-laws rules. If something cannot be worked out and has to go further, it belongs in the state or federal courts located in Texas, unless the law where you live gives you a right to have it heard somewhere else.
As the service grows, these terms will change. If a change actually affects your rights or what you pay, I will email account holders rather than quietly swapping the page and hoping nobody notices. Using the service after a change means you accept the updated terms. The date at the top always tells you the current version.
Questions about any of this, or anything else: hello@kitchentableschool.com. A real person reads it, and usually that person is me.
This page states our actual terms in plain language rather than restating statutes. It is not legal advice, and as the service grows these terms will be reviewed by a lawyer.
